Baltimoreans United In Leadership Development (BUILD) is a broad-based, non-partisan, interfaith, multiracial community power organization rooted in Baltimore’s neighborhoods and congregations. In the wake of Freddie Gray’s death, the foundation awarded BUILD a grant for community organizing in the Sandtown-Winchester community, where BUILD partners with another foundation grantee, No Boundaries Coalition. BUILD currently has two professional community organizers working in West Baltimore doing door-to-door canvassing, identifying potential residential leaders, delivering trainings, convening local businesses and non-profits, pursuing meetings with public officials and government agencies, and accomplishing necessary follow-up work to address resident concerns. This $50,000 grant provided continued support for that organizing work in West Baltimore.
