Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a national organization with an office in Baltimore that works to ensure that no refugee or immigrant child faces immigration court alone. Since October 2013, over 12,000 unaccompanied minors were released to sponsors in Maryland. Without legal representation, it is nearly impossible for these children to navigate the United States’ complex immigration laws and system. In 2017, KIND lost two major sources of federal funding for its work, leaving more than 250 children with open and active cases without representation. This $20,000 grant provided funding to help fill the gap while KIND fundraises for other long-term revenue sources and restructures its support for those children.
