The Baltimore fiscal sponsorship sector has faced challenges in recent years. The shortage of fiscal sponsor host organizations in the city constrains the growth and development of new ideas in the nonprofit sector, because founders often struggle to find a sponsor willing to host their project. After numerous conversations with stakeholders including current fiscal sponsor hosts, funders, and community groups, the University of Maryland, Baltimore Foundation (UMBF) has decided to establish a fiscal sponsor host organization (FSHO) for Baltimore-based nonprofits. This grant provided startup funds to help launch this effort, which will eventually lead to the establishment of an independent 501c-3 entity with its own Executive Director to oversee the fiscal hosting work.
