Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition

The Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition is a statewide coalition of individuals and organizations that advances and protects consumers through education, public policy work, direct service, and training programs. In 2016, MCRC released “Making the Grade: An Analysis of For Profit and Career Schools in Maryland,” the first statewide study of for-profit schools in the country. It found that for-profit and private career schools in Maryland often charge 3 to 5 times for the same programs as do public institutions, with lower employment success rates. This grant provided $20,000 in seed funding for a “Know Before You Enroll” consumer education campaign aimed at helping low-income youth safely navigate higher education and career training options while avoiding predatory institutions.
