University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC)

Started in 2020 at Cherry Hill EMS and later expanded to Lakeland EMS, UMBC’s Math Summer Program aims to eliminate summer learning loss through a full-day, in-person experience.

Students preview their next grade-level math unit before the school year begins. The program includes a morning math block—core math, math gym, and advisory—and afternoon enrichment such as community building, organized play, field trips, and athletics. Staff include school-based educators, Teach For America corps members, and UMBC students and staff. More than 850 children have participated since inception, with attendance consistently above 80%. Student and family satisfaction averages 95% or higher. The program also provides a “safe practice” environment for early-career teachers and more senior teachers seeking management experience.
