The Cost of Maryland’s ‘Kirwan’ Education Plan is Worth It (2019)
Abstract:
This op-ed argues that Maryland should fully fund the Kirwan Commission’s education reform recommendations despite their substantial cost because the long-term economic and social benefits will outweigh the investment. Citing research on educational attainment, workforce development, and economic growth, the article contends that improvements in early childhood education, teacher quality, career readiness, and support for disadvantaged students will strengthen Maryland’s economy, increase future tax revenues, and reduce public expenditures in other areas. The piece frames education reform not simply as a spending initiative, but as a long-term investment in the state’s economic competitiveness and prosperity.
